Why is collagen so important?

Check out Puori CP1

The word collagen comes from the ancient Greek word κόλλα (kolla), which translates to “glue”. This name is a perfect description of its role in the body - namely, to hold our body together, providing firmness and strength. Interestingly, collagen is so strong, that type 1 collagen fibrils are gram-for-gram stronger than steel (1) – pretty impressive!

In your body, collagen proteins form what is known as fibrils. These are long tubes of fibrous tissue which are arranged into a regular pattern. It’s these fibrils that contribute to the health of your connective tissue, bones, joints, hair, and nails. However, over time as we age, your collagen production decreases, resulting in weaker connections and less strong arrangements. This is why over time your joints become less stable and your tendons and ligaments become more prone to injury.

The traditional sources of collagen protein

The way we eat in the developed world has changed a lot over the last couple of hundred years. We typically choose to buy perfectly trimmed cuts of meat and fish, without any of the connective tissue or sinew that would traditionally have been found on animal produce. Eating more plant-based protein sources and less of the gelatin and collagen-rich food, like traditional bone broth, or pigs’ trotters, and offal, has created a significant shift in our amino acid intake. For that reason, eating more connective tissue or gelatin can help boost your collagen production by providing the right amino acids, but we know that connective tissue or gelatin is not to everyone’s taste. If you prefer the trimmed cuts either for taste or convenience, then supplementing with collagen can help bring you the amino acids and proteins, you need.

Why supplement with CP1 Collagen Peptides?

Major part of the skin, hair and nails

Collagen has a complex amino acid profile including a mix of both essential and non-essential types. It’s particularly high in conditional amino acids, like arginine, glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, which are great for support of the structure of our skin, hair and nails. Type 1 collagen is the main collagen type found in human skin (80%) along with collagen type 3 making up 15% of the rest of the skin collagen (2, 3). As we grow older, the aging of our skin is seen in the form of lines, wrinkles and pigment changes due to the breakdown of collagen. This occurs naturally with age, but also with damage from the sun or disease (4).

Supports bone health

Bone status or bone health is very important to focus on. Scientists estimate that, worldwide, every third women over the age of 50, will sustain an osteoporotic-induced bone fracture (5). A recently published study in the peer-reviewed journal Nutrients, says that supplementing with collagen peptides improved the bone density of postmenopausal women and was associated with a favorable shift in bone markers, indicating increased bone formation and reduced bone degradation overall (6). Furthermore, collagen is a specific protein that’s highly abundant in our bone mass and protein in general has been found to have supportive effects on our bone health (7).

Muscle Maintenance and Growth

After a vigorous workout, your muscle tissue develops microscopic tears, which rapidly repair and become stronger. This is what leads to muscle growth, also known as hypertrophy. While muscle responds to exercise relatively quickly, the building of connective tissue and, in particular, formation of collagen is slower, which means that your muscles may be getting stronger, but the connective tissue around your joints may not have caught up.

What some of our customers are saying about CP1

Clean pure collagen

"I love this collagen. It is 100% clean pure collagen. I search for hours trying to find a reputable company. My conclusion was there’s very few out there. Puori is the only one to make the list. You can go to the clean label website and verify the information. I love the results. I definitely see a huge difference in my face and in my joints. The price is amazing. My only go to collagen."

- Rae, Puori Customer

My favorite daily collagen powder

"I initially found this brand after looking up research on whey protein powders, because I had read about the harmful ingredients many of them include. An independent review of whey protein brands, found Puori's to be the cleanest. From there I read about the company's commitment to the cleanness and quality of their products. This gave me confidence in their products, so I switched to their collagen powder from another brand I had been using that did not go through independent review. It's hard to tell how well supplements are working, but I've been happy with it in the year I've been using it."
